Neurological Assessment

Target Audience

Registered and Enrolled Nurses

Goal

To be know and  be aware of a deteriorating patient and foresee possible reasons and to further use the GCS to determine and report level of consciousness for clinical reporting.

Objectives

  • Describe the common causes of a deteriorating conscious level.
  • Describe how to assess a patient with an altered conscious level using the Glasgow coma scale.
  • Describe the emergency management of a patient with a decreasing conscious state
  • Be aware of possible reasons for unconsciousness
  • Know and utilise effective assessment tools such as the GCS to report clinical findings
